I recently watched the documentary about a Myanmar artist, “A Sketch of Waton”. A Sketch of Watone, directed by Burmese director Kyi Phyu Shin, which profiled Watone’s life, won the National Geographic Award for Best Feature Film.
From the seclusion of his charming privileged home, Waton – one of Myanmar’s most celebrated painters – shares his thoughts on his life, his art, and his family. Watton spent most of his life painting and lived simply and modestly, according to his colleagues.
Firstly, explaining about his name “Watton” means “Earth”, he likes this name because he believes “we are all part of the earth, no matter how rich or poor you are, you will end up in the earth, as a corpse or ashes. He wants to paint all the creatures of the world. Money doesn’t matter to him, he wants to do what he loves. He thinks that many people should do things not to live such a life. He explains that they are not partners in their lives. Married for 40 years, his wife is from a village, she can too To despise her life.Their children are all fine.So he has made his whole life and his family happy even though they are not very rich.He never beat his children but he was beaten by his parents. He does not like this kind of manner.
I read the news of his death, after the documentary ended, so sad to hear that. But I will always admire and remember him.
